 Schools Threatened Species Collaborative Art Project installed outside the Gallery and in the Bairnsdale Main Street Gardens.

Local artist collective CARE - Concerned Artists Resisting Extinction, East Gippsland Art Gallery, East Gippsland Shire Council and local schools all teamed up on an art project to commemorate #ThreatenedSpeciesDay2022 and to raise awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction.

CARE artists designed 42 endangered East Gippsland animals for students to paint. With help from the Bairnsdale Men’s Shed each painting has been made into garden stakes is on display around the Gallery and in the gardens on Main Street

National Threatened Species Day is commemorated across the country on September 7th to raise awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction. It is commemorated annually on the anniversary of the death in captivity of the last known thylacine, or Tasmanian Tiger.

 

Australia is home to more than 500,000 animal and plant species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Over the last 200 years, more than 100 animal and plant species have become extinct. Click here to find out more
